First thing just imagine the title of this post is read in a really Scottish accent “A wee bit of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties”
One of my favorite things about visiting new places as a traveler is getting a chance to sample the local food, and Scotland was no different, and what is the first thing that you think of when you think of Scottish food?
Haggis
Considering what it’s made of it looks pretty apetizing, Not like the Guinea Pig (Cuy) I ate in Ecuador, Yuck. So what’s in Haggis?
Haggis is a savoury pudding made up of Sheep’s pluck, which is all the fun stuff, heart, liver and lungs; This is then minced up with onion, oatmeal, suet, salt, spices and stock, traditionally all of these ingredients would be then encased in the animal’s stomach and simmered for a few hours until it is cooked, however most commercial haggis these days is prepared in sausage casing instead of an actual stomach.
My Haggis was a little fancier and stylized than most and was served in a delicious tower of neeps and tatties (turnip and potatoes), Overall I found Haggis to be quite tasty. It tasted very similar to a beef rissole or sausage, would I get it again? maybe, however if given the choice between Haggis and beef I think I would go with the beef.
The More you Know:
- Haggis is used in a sport called Haggis Hurling, Which involves throwing the Haggis as far as you possibly can.
- The furthest Haggis has been thrown in “Haggis Hurling” is 217 feet.
- The world record for Haggis eating is 3 pounds (1.4kg) in 8 minutes.
Would you try Haggis? Or if you have what did you think of it?
I tried haggis in my cousins wedding in Aberdeen some years back. And it was actually pretty good! Until my grandfather told me it was haggis.
